BLUEGRASS: Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver 'Life Is a Story' CD Review

The opening tune from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s CD Life Is A Story is a poignant song titled “Kids These Days”. If you look at the world today with everyone having life somewhat easy, the song is really something that hits home with a lot of folks.

“Little Girl” is going to be familiar to fans of country music. Songs do not always work effectively when they cross genre platforms. This song about abuse does a good job coming through with flying colors.

Song three is a bouncy track called “Life of a Hard Working Man”. Most people listening to this will be able to identify with the feelings of being stuck at a job they really don’t want just to be able to pay the bills.

As you listen to “Life to My Days” you can identify with the words and feeling. It’s a nice positive play on words where the singer can’t add more days to their life so they opt to add more living to what he has.

It’s easy for anyone who has loved and lost to identify with this song. “I See a Heartbreak Coming” is a broken heart set to music.

Most musicians and those that have loved a musician can readily feel the sentiment behind the song “Guitar Case”. Wandering minstrels are quite a hard bread to love and this song oozes emotion.

The song “What Am I Living For” is a classic waltz with some very spot on harmony vocals. It is just a nice straight forward love song.

The title itself is a nice play on words. “Bluegrass Blues” has a nice feel that really does make you feel the pain that the writer intended. It’s a cross between traditional bluegrass and the blues.

With name like “Derailed” you might expect that this would be a fast lost love song. If that is your thoughts then you are not going to be at all disappointed in what you hear. There is some nice instrumentation in there.

“Love Lives Again” is yet another very well done waltz. It is one of those tunes that weaves a story into the beat and at times integrates the instruments into that story.

I love the title “Cry Across Kansas” and really wasn’t sure what to expect from it. It is a nice steady beat song that I can envision a dance floor full of two stepping couples enjoying it.

“Driving It Home” brings the CD of stories to an end in a very punchy end. This song has a nice chord progression and the instrumentation melts in your ears. It’s a great way to bring it to an end.

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
Over all this is a great CD that fans of country music and bluegrass will both like. There are a lot of influences here that show through on the CD by Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver from the father of bluegrass to Ricky Skaggs and too many others to mention. Even if you are not a hard core bluegrass fan you owe it to yourself to give this CD a spin, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and enlightened.
